| When Art Gets
Wired is an art program created by Lori Trussler Emmington,
an Art teacher from Folsom High School in Folsom, California. This
Art program educates high school student’s grades 9-12, and
uses wire as an art medium.
The purpose of this art program is to challenge,
teach and instruct young minds on the basic concepts of line,
based on Alexander Calder’s wire sculptures. Once the activities
jump from two dimensional line and shape to three-dimensional
form, space and form, also become an important
part of the program that consists in 7 lessons. The students start
by exploring the contour line and its characteristics. They experiment
with gesture and contour drawing, learn translation of a two-dimensional
idea into a three dimensional form, to finally transfer what they
have learned into a three-dimensional wire sculpture.
This program serves to inspire and to promote
the importance of art teaching in high schools. Students develop
their creative thinking talents and vision. At the end of the
program, students present their sculptures in a “When
Art Gets Wired” art show. Parents, teachers, administrators,
and the community are invited and have the opportunity to view
and admire, up to 175 pieces of art, ranging from mobiles to figure
sculptures, realism to abstraction, simple, contour sculpture
to complex, massive forms.
